Building Our First House – Exterior Color Choices

Hi Beauties.

Hope all of you are having a fab week! I wanted to thank you all so much for the love on my last “Building Our First Home” post!
read it here: Color Selection Appointment & Design Center

Today I will be sharing our exterior color choices! šŸ™‚ Let me start off by saying, choosing a siding color was by far the hardest choice we made in this entire process. I feel that the exterior of a home is a true reflection of it’s owners; and there were 3 things that we were certain we wanted for our new home,
– a front porch
– colonial or southern feel/ siding color
-red front door

BUT, herein lies the problem when working with a development builder.. typically, (at least this was the case for us) you must adhere to the builder’s rules and the HOA. For us this meant, our siding and brick color had to be different from all of our bordering neighbors. It also meant, no red front door.
Lucky for us, we are the first home to be built on one side of the street so we didn’t have to take neighbors to our left and right into consideration. There are however, homes being built across the street from us already, so we did have to choose different colors from them.
After much indecision, we settled on “Natural Clay” for our siding color. I called the builders right away to lock in our color choice early and then I sat back and reveled in the fact that we would be getting our first pick!
Fast forward 2 days to a builder’s meeting concerning a certain siding that was to be “immediately discontinued,” I bet you cant guess which color ? ;]
Yes, natural clay was to be taken off the list of possible siding choices due to melting issues. I admit, I was a bit devastated at first. (albeit a bit grateful for non melting siding ;] lol) In the same week, my husband and I also had to switch lots due to a drainage concern, and learned that the HOA did not allow red front doors.

As trivial as it all is, I learned an important lesson with these minor setbacks.. Nothing is ever certain in the world of new home construction šŸ˜‰ Sometimes you have to go with the flow. For a “Super Planner” like myself, this can be a bit disconcerting at first. But I’ve learned that it’s important to be patient, understanding and yes, even a bit spontaneous!

My husband and I ended up deciding on Certainteed’s Savannah Wicker for our new siding color; a lovely warm tan shade that had a somewhat southern feel paired with black shutters. We also chose the redder Milbrook brick (to replace my red front door hehe) for a nice contrast to the dark shutters and roof. Our roof color was chosen by the builder, dependent on our siding and shutter choices. In the end, I’m very happy with our final selections and so excited to see how they all come together!

Anyhow, enough with my rambling! I’m sure you’re really here to see our home’s exterior color selections! šŸ˜‰

I suggest that you do measure how wide the roof area is, how many coats of paint you want for your roof and what kind of roof paint suits your climate best so you can paint your roof speedily and more efficiently. 8. Hi Becky!
    Congratulations on building, so exciting!
Yes, the natural clay siding is prone to melting if your neighbors have any sun-facing windows that point towards the side of your house. We have been so happy with savannah wicker! I was skeptical about it at first, but really pleased with how it turned out with the black shutters, and now our red front door! šŸ™‚

  9. We are also building house and i can't decide on the color. Either savannah wicker or clay. You did mention that clay is due to melting?

  10. The color combination is beautiful!! Great job. Were having a house built (ranch) next year and we also, selected the Savannah wicker siding. Only we are going with dark brown shutters to match our dark brown brick. My only concern is all our window trim is tan and I thought it would all blend in with the siding. So, that's why I am adding the dark brown shutters. Good luck. Thanks for sharing.

  11. If you find a good builder like Kolter Homes then they will have amazing color pallettes for the home that you are considering building. My younger brother and his wife just built a home with them and had a good experience. For what it's worth.

  15. Gorgeous! Who are you building with? I work in sales with new home construction and we build the Dunkirk too. I am shocked to see that huge design center! In my area we just have a smaller design center in the basement area of the model home. Also color appointments don't take 8 hours, haha. But hey, that's not a bad thing necessarily! šŸ™‚

  17. glad to hear your journey went smoothly! we actually added a 2 foot extension, hopefully it will be worth it since it was rather pricey. 19. Can I just say how freaking excited I am to see your house come together!? Ahhh!!! You're awesome for being able to handle the changes…I think I'd freak out. Which I guess is why I'm so afraid to build in a development lol! I think your home is going to turn out just beautifully. I LOVE the color choices!

  20. My husband & I also had our house built & it was very exciting & fun. We didn't have any setbk but we do reject not adding the addition 2 feet to the back of the house. Dark siding is better than light cause you can't tell it needs a powerwash lol We also have an HOA but after about 2yrs I changed the colors of my shutters & front door from burgundy to purple which is my favorite color. Now my door is a dark red but my shutters are still purple ;)Enjoy the process & don't go over budget!!! xoxo

  21. Looks amazing. I'm moving to a new townhouse my self and totally understand that paint choices, where furniture goes, and where to out the appliances is stressful. Just remeber it will all be beautiful in the end!!!!!

  23. I love the color choices. Its beautiful. I have had set backs with both homes my husband and I bought. But in the end it was all worth it. Even the up's an down's and the waiting:)
You and your husband will love it, and it will be amazing! Congrats again.
